Pine cladding

This old shack was formerly owned by a beloved character in the seaside suburb of Coledale, and seemed to embody his character within it. Neighbours were relieved when it became evident the cottage would not be demolished and curiosity grew as the new forms took shape. The new owners with their two young kids embraced ideas of authenticity and vibrancy, and sought an unpretentious house, economical in size with strong connections to the escarpment.   Within a tight budget, this project set out to rekindle the old cottage, peeling back a few layers and accepting its limitations, with the architectural focus on a new addition to the streetfront. The building is located near Sjaustru fishing village on the east coast of Gotland. The holiday home sits among maritime forest with thin vegetation cover towards the Baltic sea and direct access to the local beach. The client had a strong vision on what they wanted to achieve as a family holiday home in Gotland and was fully engaged in the design process. A process that started 15 years ago when they bought a small beach cabin on this exclusive site. They spent those years absorbing the site and took as much advantage of it as possible. This 360 sf. structure is located on a remote 60 acre, privately owned forest in the Catskills, New York. Tinhouse by Rural Design, is located on the northwestern tip of the Isle of Skye, on a steeply sloping site overlooking The Minch, the body of water separating the Inner and Outer Hebrides.Tinhouse is an essay in landscape, economy, construction and imagination which shares the same design ethic as its neighbouring sister the Wooden House. Where, however, the Wooden House celebrates timber detailing the Tinhouse celebrates corrugated metal sheeting, commonly used on the agricultural buildings of the rural landscape. How to fit into a site at the heart of an overall restructuring project on a city-wide scale and design an extension on an already very crowded plot of land? As one consistent entity, the Sports Centre pulls together a large number of elements from different briefs, i.e. an already-existing gymnasium, swimming pool and indoor tennis courts with the creation of a multi-purpose arena, a boxing hall, a bodybuilding hall, two dojos, a football pitch with stands, outdoor tennis courts and a clubhouse. The task was to add storage space, provide privacy, minimise overshadowing, & provide enclosure & a focal point for the private open space & living rooms of the dwelling - all in a contemporary, sculptural, functional & unfamiliar fashion. The direct use of material & structure of the existing garage extrapolated to include the use of recycled materials - plywood & lights from Supermodels, stair framing from the existing hardwood trussed garage roof, fibreglass roofing from the main dwelling's construction, polycarbonate sheeting from a former office fitout. This project responds to the specific request of a consulting engineer’s company to transform a standard industrial hall, a former carpentry, into their new main office that can accommodate 80 employees.
