AQ1 Althan Quartier Francis

Located at Vienna’s Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, AQ1 Althan Quartier Francis transforms a late twentieth-century railway station into a contemporary mixed-use urban district while retaining the architectural value and embodied carbon of the existing structure. The project by Delugan Meissl Associated Architects and Josef Weichenberger Architekten demonstrates how large-scale regeneration can prioritise adaptive reuse over demolition, balancing environmental responsibility with changing urban requirements. The Koulas Project by Alex Papadopoulos inspired and informed by the local typology of the medieval watchtower

This residence in the area of Kolossi Castle (Cypress) is inspired and informed by the typology of the koulas – i.e. medieval watchtower. Inspired by the compact form and small openings typical of the koulas, the design by Alex Papadopoulos features a main tower volume with a low lying linear volume positioned adjacent. The siting of the building volumes and the positioning of openings and outdoor spaces were determined based on the location of existing olive trees, which were considered important elements to retain.
