Rowhouse

The 1+1 Houses were designed as two distinct residences that share the same structural layout. In this project, the placement of concrete pillars and beams was fundamental in guiding the formal conception of the homes. The goal was to develop a design with an economical and unique structure, while also accommodating two different residences: a courtyard house and a house with a lateral setback. Although they are twin houses, the two residences were designed to embrace different possibilities. NetZeroRowHouse began as two architects designing and building a home for their family in the Capitol Hill / H Street neighborhood of Washington DC.  A simple notion about adding solar panels started the journey to create a Net Zero Row House. This 4 story Italianate row house was was converted from a three family to a single-family house with original interior details carefully restored. The garden floor features an office and den, the parlor floor has a living room with custom window seat at the front and a kitchen and new steel balcony at the rear. The kitchen has custom painted cabinets and long narrow table. New steel windows with narrow subdivisions at the rear of the house complement the slender aesthetic of the balcony balustrade and cabinets. This project was completed under Meyer & Associates' previous iteration - MEYER+VORSTER.   The architects were briefed three years ago by a professional couple to design a small, low maintenance city residence in De Waterkant, which could be used during the week while they were involved with their medical practices. Their life would be shared between this house and a large weekend house at Aurora, a few hours from Cape Town. The clients emphasised that the design of the house had to be bespoke, with every aspect of it, purpose made and purpose designed around their specific needs, requirements and busy lifestyle.
