Set on a grassy stretch of landscape outside Bridgehampton, NY, this house was designed as a contemporary interpretation of the region’s vernacular architecture, customized to our client’s aspirations for the property. The building’s distinctive form references the saltbox, a traditional pitched-roof architectural style prevalent throughout Long Island’s Eastern End. The house is oriented so the long axes face north and south, with custom windows on the southern side that follow the roofline, providing ample natural light throughout the day. Saltbox comprises a complete reimagining of a 1920s brick Cape Cod. Fogo Island, located about twelve miles off the northeast coast of Newfoundland, Canada, supports a population of twenty-five hundred people. This raw yet poetic place, at its most dramatic appears as a barren, wild and windswept landscape, comprised of stark boulders that sit on extensive outcroppings of granite bedrock that rise above Fogo Island’s thin layer of soil and lichens. Fairmount Avenue Townhomes is an 18 unit, LEED Platinum certified, affordable townhouse development. The project is designed for the Chattanooga Housing Authority and provides low income housing in the desirable North Chattanooga Neighborhood. Only thirty-six projects from across the United States were selected to receive grants for building sustainable and affordable homes from the 2009 American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Fairmount Avenue Development in Tennessee was one of them – and it’s an attention-getter.
