Pinnacle House

Set atop a prominent ridgeline in Rancho Santa Fe, Pinnacle House is conceived as a contemporary estate that blurs the boundary between architecture, landscape, and horizon. Positioned on 1.9 acres with panoramic views extending across rolling canyons to the Pacific Ocean, the residence is designed as a private retreat that celebrates Southern California’s climate, light, and indoor-outdoor way of living. The 19,700 square foot compound is organized as a collection of interconnected pavilions anchored by a dramatic central living space. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, expansive overhangs, and a carefully curated material palette dissolve the distinction between interior and exterior, allowing the surrounding landscape to become an extensio... Jason O'Rear Jason O'Rear Jason O'Rear Seeking to create flexible, daylight-infused interior floor plates that maximize energy efficiency, digital tools were employed to assist in massing, placement, and façade development. Tata Hall for the Sciences

The interdisciplinary Tata Hall for the Sciences, designed by CO Architects, increases research capacity at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), and provides a new hub for teaching and scholarly engagement.  The 130,000-square-foot, seven-floor building combines research and teaching from two different departments, biology and chemistry.  Recognizing that many scientific breakthroughs occur through interdisciplinary collaboration, UC San Diego required research labs to be designed to encourage interaction, with work benches grouped together in an open area, rather than in separate spaces, which is common in typical lab layouts.  Specialized research procedure rooms are situated at the ends of the building t... Marsh and McLennan San Diego

Marsh and McClennan turned to ID Studios to redesign their 85,000 s.f. workspace to reflect their San Diego roots dating back to 1909 and the local Southern California environment they inhabit. ID Studios responded with a design centered on San Diego, the most biologically diverse county in the United States where temperatures, landscapes and wildlife can vary greatly within just a few miles. The new design showcases and embodies the five habitats, including farmlands, wetlands, beaches, mountains and deserts through a diverse layering of natural materials and textures. The work of local surf and nature photographer Aaron Chang is featured as well as graphics depicting the “fingerprints” of several local tree species which provides visual w... More

Ocean Penthouse

This project involved combining two 12th floor units into one expansive corner condominium and maximizing the uninterrupted views of the ocean. This was achieved by eliminating the existing partitions and walls, which dramatically changed the space, giving expansive ocean views from all rooms, even including bathrooms and closets.Subtle hues and soft materials create a tranquil setting complementary of the site’s natural splendor. The walls and counters are of warm white Calacatta marble. A bleached French walnut kitchen separates the dining and living areas. Hints of gold in the living room, soft purple in the dining room, and light blues in the master suite echo the hues of the sky at different times of day as seen through the floor-to-ce... More

Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge

The Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge, built for San Diego’s Centre City Development Corporation, completes the city's 100-year-old vision of a Park-to-Bay Link, connecting Balboa Park and the San Diego Bay. This iconic 550-foot bridge provides a safe crossing over the heavily traveled Harbor Drive and existing train and trolley tracks, and links the Convention Center and a multi-level parking garage on the bay side with a main route into the city's downtown and the nearby ballpark. The design and detailing of this project required innovative solutions that both challenged conventional bridge methods and provided new architectural models for future bridge designers. The 500-foot curved span of the bridge is supported by a unique 130-foot t... More

National City Aquatic Center

Located fifteen miles north of the U.S./ Mexico border in southern San Diego County, CA, the single-story, two structure aquatic center marks the realization of National City’s long-term goal to replace a makeshift facility housed in trailers for over a decade. The 5,500 sf complex is sited on the southern edge of a 5½-acre public park offering unobstructed views towards protected wetlands, the San Diego Bay, and beyond. The eastern structure houses a large gathering space beneath a sloping, mono-pitched roof. Perched atop its base of glass walls, the roof floats as a kite slices into the air, creating a fluid dynamic for its substantial counterpart. To the west, a glass box enclosed by 5 ft operable windows contains office spaces. A large w... More
