Situated between Central Station and the Spui, next to the new Ministries of Foreign Affairs, stands De Kroon, a 131m high rise residential tower including office- and commercial space. The area is bounded on three sides by busy traffic arteries. The basic principles of the building design are based on the plot settings of the early American skyscrapers. An important reference for the building was the early high-rise typology of the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century in Chicago. The entrance hall of this skyscraper created acoustical challenges with floor to ceiling windows and hard surface walls. Acoustic mesh panels (AMP) were installed noticeably reducing acoustic reverberation in the hall. The Zalmhaven is the new eye-catcher on the Rotterdam skyline. With 215 meters, this will be the highest residential tower in the Benelux. Two flanking towers (by KAAN Architecten) form a visual staircase to the lower Scheepvaartkwartier.  For this ambitious project, much attention has been paid to the relationship with the environment and the liveliness at ground level. On the urban scale, the high tower acts as a connecting element between the Scheepvaartkwartier and the Kop van Zuid, between the north and south side of the city.
