Together with the clients, a clearly structured floor plan concept was developed for the detached house, which creates plenty of space for generous living areas and establishes a harmonious connection between the interior and exterior spaces.

The building site is a quiet plot of land between old farmsteads on the outskirts of Holzkirchen in Upper Bavaria. The residential building is an elongated structure that stretches along the edge of the plot and opens up to the outside through a covered open space to the south. A skin of untreated local larch was chosen for the building envelope. This is pulled over the façade openings in places to create differentiated areas and also provide privacy.

Timber Hotel
In 2019 a large timber restaurant is built south of the new town Almere. The building’s special volume is smoothly constructed with cross laminated timber. In 2023 the building will be expanded with two hotel wings. Again, CLT seems the best material for the job.

The two straight wings will frame the existing building. Between the new hotel wings and the zigzagging facade of the former restaurant, green courtyards offer also pleasant outside spaces for the guests. The galleries function as veranda for the hotel rooms.

The primary ambition for this project is the creation of centralised living space, reminiscent of the client’s childhood home, with a boundary defined at the site edge, minimising the introduction of any further sense of enclosure.A linked ambition is that of authenticity in dialogue with the site, a notion of building with something found, expressed through the solidity and permanence of concrete platforms and hollows, and a fireplace.

Our philosophy was to address client needs while meeting all constraints imposed by a conservation area context. Central to this approach was a decision to limit visibility of the addition from the street, maintaining the prominence of the bungalow facade.
