West 83rd Street Townhouse

The challenge of transforming a narrow, historic townhouse on New York’s Upper West Side into a modern, open space inspired us to reinterpret the loft concept, resulting in a vertical loft that seamlessly connects both horizontal and vertical planes. Beatrice Pediconi Beatrice Pediconi By designing the grand staircase as a fluid, serpentine coil, we created a dynamic passage and light well that unites the spaces with openness and continuity. The design incorporates honest, contemporary materials, while a new addition houses a private entertainment lounge with uninterrupted views of both north and south Manhattan. Beatrice Pediconi Beatrice Pediconi The result is a spatially continuous home that feels expansive de... More

Nature's Edge

Designed for clients who wanted a large, sprawling home that didn’t look large and sprawling, our Nature’s Edge home in Hudson, Wisconsin, overlooks The St. Croix River. The entryway is subdued as our clients didn’t want visitors to feel they were coming to a huge estate. JMAD JMAD JMAD The lot itself was challenging, due to height restrictions, a ravine and a bluff. But these are the kinds of creative challenges we love. In the back, it’s not a two-story, it’s two stories further away; that was the only way to get the additional space without seeing the house from the river because there were these certain angles that we had to abide by. It was a big challenge to design views to the river but m... More

Villa Petra

Villa Petra is the product of an ambitious renovation of a featureless building set on a sloping terrain in Carvoeiro, Algarve.  Since the existing structure couldn't be altered, the Studio designed new levels to harmonise the building with the site topography, creating movement and separating the day and night areas. Fernando Guerra On three levels, the house features a ground level entirely dedicated to the living area, perfect for hosting guests and having parties thanks to its connection with the outdoor swimming pool area, and upper and lower floors where the bedrooms are situated.  Fernando Guerra Fernando Guerra The house has been dressed in Macael white marble, wrapped in a garment of preciousness and dis... Tribeca Duplex Penthouse

This duplex apartment in Tribeca offers breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the downtown Manhattan skyline. Our design sought to preserve the original layout’s open, airy feel while providing privacy for a family of four with two young children. To make the most of the panoramic city views, the layout is carefully organized along the perimeter, with storage and secondary spaces integrated into the apartment's core. On the lower floor, the bedrooms and family area are centered around a compact storage volume. On the upper floor, the entry, living room, kitchen, and dining area create an open, flowing layout, with the study and entertainment areas separated by a continuous storage spine. A wide staircase opening enhances the co... More

Santa Cruz House renovation cleverly reprograms space and strengthens connections

In Santa Cruz, Portugal, this renovated house is a part of project of six semi-detached houses originally constructed in the 1980s. Located on the corner of the block, this house features a new program based on optimal amounts of natural light, with a stronger relationship between floors and as well as a strengthened connection between exterior and interior living areas. Francisco Nogueira Central to the renovation by Manuel Tojal Architects is a straight staircase that links the floors together and turns them to the outside. Designed as a void and excavation/subtraction of the pre-existing building the staircase terminates at the roof patio, which was previously unused. The architect explains in this way the staircases becomes a &lsq... More

Ledge House

In the local context where house owners generally wants to fit in as many bedrooms as possible, this project went the opposite direction, so as to free up the rest of the house for communal spaces. The brief is deceptively simple but reflects a kinship that wants to spend as much time together as possible; the family wants only 2 bedrooms in the 3 storey residence. All other program spaces in the house are designed as shared spaces without enclosures. The key design gesture is a cantilevered ledge space that punctures through the middle of the house. At its side, the floor is pulled back to create a double volume atrium that links it spatially to the other storeys. This is the heart of the house. Expressed as a bridge that connects the 2... More
