Benjamin Hubert has designed the world’s lightest timber table as part of an internal studio research project into lightweight constructions. The table, titled Ripple, is 2.5 metres long, 1 metre wide, and weighs just 9 kilograms. Made using 70-80% less material than a standard timber table, Ripple can be assembled and manoeuvred by a single person. The table’s impressive strength to weight ratio is enabled by an innovative production process of corrugating plywood for furniture through pressure lamination, which was developed by Benjamin Hubert with Canadian manufacturer Corelam. Basic geometric shapes seem to define Wonmin Park’s Haze Series. The entire object gives the impression that it unveils itself in front of us through the opaqueness of its parts. But our perception deceives us when we think it begins and ends there. Each Haze object carries within it a dissymmetry of form hidden from sight. A dissymmetry of form that is balanced out by the colours created in the unique casting process that gives birth to these objects. Very few know that the initials of BD are originally related to Boccaccio Design. The Spanish company was born during the later part of day, in the 70's, with drinks, the rhythm of music and under the sheter of Boccaccio, a famous nocturnal club in Barcelona. One of the illustrious collaborators in those atypical beginnings of the company was the architect and Italian designer, Ettore Sottsass jr., who travelled often to the city, much more before the founding of the mythical group, Memphis. Two Royal Designers for Industry, one from the world of furniture design and one from the world of Formula One racing car design, have combined their individual skills in the design of this super slim composite table. By using state-of-the-art autosport and aerospace technology and exploiting the inherent rigidity of layered carbon fibre, Terence Woodgate and John Barnard have created an astonishing table.
