Retama House

A magnificent split-trunk live oak has stood guard over the center of this tight lot for decades, and in recent years, thwarted many attempts on capitalizing on the property’s urban proximity and downtown views. After years of vetting home sites across Austin with the client, the architects presented a carefully composed intervention that brought the live oaks into the architectural fold, remaining attentive to their delicate root systems while leveraging their long limbs and lush canopies for shade and privacy. Chase Daniel The resulting architecture is a rigorously compact shape that belies a surprisingly generous interior experience, while always considerate and connected to the landscape. A double-height central atrium splay... More

Saint Sarkis Church by David Hotson displays an innovative façade memorializing victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide

Designed by New York David Hotson Architect, Saint Sarkis Church in Carrollton, Texas, celebrates Armenia's legacy as the world's first Christian nation, having adopted Christianity in 301AD, and reflects the faith and endurance of the Armenian people through 14 centuries of challenge and upheaval. Particularly striking is an innovative façade memorializing victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide. Courtesy David Hotson Though finished with modern materials, the solid grey mass of the church's exterior refers to the monolithic and sculpture nature of ancient Armenian stone churches. Saint Sarkis Church references, specifically, the ancient Armenian church of Saint Hripsime, which still stands today in the modern Armenian capit... More

Light plays a central role in Steven Holl’s Houston Museum of Fine Arts expansion

Two key design choices by Steven Holl make sure the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, is flooded with natural light. Concave roof openings let the light in from above and seven porous gardens, cut out of the volume, let the light into traffic corridors. © Richard Barnes The curved dancing roof slices open strips of glazing to let the light into the top level galleries. The undersides of the curved ceilings function as light reflectors that distribute the light across each gallery.  © Richard Barnes The organic shape refers to the lush vegetation and water that characterizes the new campus expansion. The two levels 237,000-sf Kinder Building is part of a master plan that knits together a 1924 historic church... More

MAGIC Architecture transform a ‘scrappy’ Texas building by revealing its original 1920s charm

In a now revitalized Austin, Texas neighbourhood that was once known for its rough character, MAGIC Architecture has transformed what they describe as an existing ‘scrappy’ building that served for many years as a liquor store into The Meteor, an all-day café and custom bicycle shop. Credit: Leonid Furmansky The concrete building was originally constructed in the 1920s, but it’s original charm and potential had become hidden after years of ill-advised additions including awnings and cluttered signage. Credit: Leonid Furmansky As a starting point, the architects looked to the exterior wall openings, installing a typed of triangulated or ‘krinkled’ type of window. The dynamic planes of the new... Kelly Scott Madison, Austin

Kelly Scott Madison (KSM), a leading independent media agency, required a new office space for the latest arm of its Media Family in Austin, Texas.  Focused on their core belief that media is at the center of our world, KSM sought to create a space that both shows how media impacts our lives and blends Austin’s bright, colorful Southwest aesthetic with subtle references to its home base in Chicago.  The new space includes open office benching, movable furniture, vintage signage and a custom mural created my famed Austin street artist Federico Archuleta. Southerleigh

The Southerleigh Brewhouse celebrates the architecture and soul of the 1890s vintage building. Together with Joel Mozersky Design, we worked together to bring the gritty magnificence of the Brewhouse back to life, as if it had never shut down. Clayton Korte retained vestiges of the deep history at Pearl through the re-purposing of historic equipment into decorative and functional pieces. These icons of the past have been scattered throughout the 5,000 square foot restaurant and 2,600 square foot Brewery. Fifteen foot original stainless steel kettle tops were re-purposed to provide a focal point to one of the three dining rooms. Honoring the past, the copper clad mash tun and boil kettle sit in the same location and are a focal point as pat... More

The Bottling Dept. Food Hall

Originally constructed in 1894, a devastating fire claimed the historic Pearl Bottling House in 2003. Pearl salvaged as much from the rubble as possible, and hired Clayton Korte to rebuild the 13,132-square foot-structure as a modern interpretation of a lost Classical Revival jewel that would serve as a venue for emerging chefs and culinary talent.   Located at the heart of the historic Pearl campus, the Bottling Department sits along the San Antonio River and is the city’s first food hall that houses local chefs. An anchor in the Pearl campus, the building is surrounded on all sides by a mixture of residential apartments and condos, offices, retail shops, restaurants, and Hotel Emma.   The mixed-use campus fosters rich... Eberly

Eberly, inspired by sources both humble and lofty, marries a former 1970s print shop building with a salvaged bar from the storied Cedar Tavern in New York’s Greenwich Village to create a sophisticated bar, cafe and restaurant in central Austin. Following the owner’s purchase of the legendary bar, hand-carved mahogany sections were carefully transported and restored with the goal to again surround the bar top with a creative atmosphere worthy of the original. Working within the raw concrete and glass context of the print shop, the design team divided the building into three distinct environments: a “restored” Cedar Tavern, a mod Café, and a book-filled Study.   Located just south of the Colorado River,... Hotel Saint Cecilia

Clayton Korte transformed this site with six magnificent Live Oaks and its centerpiece 1888-vintage Victorian mansion (recognized by Austin’s Historic Landmark Commission as the Miller-Crockett House) into an oasis for one of Austin’s treasured boutique hotels. The design preserves the park-like space in the middle of the site in keeping with the original rhythms of the neighborhood. The Live Oaks provide the framework for siting four new buildings to complement the renovated mansion, itself converted into five suites. Three sleek new structures on the site’s downhill slope frame the swimming pool. Muted neutral tones help the new buildings recede into the site, define the perimeter of the grounds, and allow the historic b... More
