This is a ground up townhouse in the Upper West Side of New York City. We dug down 18' into bedrock to create space for a basketball court, high def golf simulator, gym and home office below the house, and built a new, 5-story townhouse on top. It features 10′ and taller ceilings on every floor, elevator, and rooftop terrace. The ground floor windows and entry doors are set within a deep limestone base, and the upper facade is buff brick with projecting window lintels and sills in zinc. Our client bought an urban terraced house in Aalst that was to be renovated. During the initial discussions, it quickly became clear that there were few demands for the renovation. This gave us the necessary freedom to surprise them. Our biggest challenge was to create enough light and to incorporate a 20° bend in the rear wall into the plan.  Bert Vereecke This kink soon proved to be the key to the design. Design project of a 2-storey townhouse in the suburbs of Prague. The space was designed for a young couple. The first floor is a public area, with an entrance group, a guest bathroom and a combined space for the kitchen, dining room and living room. A developer acquired 544 State Street and did a gut renovation of the Brooklyn townhouse after it had been vacant and neglected. Fortunately, through close analysis of zoning law, Studio ST found that the owner could enlarge the building by almost 50% by adding to each floor and excavating the cellar. This new construction, five-story townhouse is home to a young family of four. The front façade combines brick, speaking to the neighbors, a cedar rainscreen, and black aluminum panels. Maintaining an indoor-outdoor connection throughout was important to the clients, so despite the narrow 25-foot lot, balconies and terraces open each floor up to exterior spaces.
