“Raw Threshold” by Al Borde questions what it means to be local
In Sharjah, UAE, Quito-based architectural studio Al Borde crafted a pavilion using raw materials that is both a welcoming threshold and meeting point. The project, entitled “Raw Threshold”, was designed for the 2nd Sharjah Architecture Triennial whose theme, The Beauty of Impermanence: An Architecture of Adaptability, inspired a structure that questions what it means to be local. In a world governed by capitalism, where everything is readily available and accessible, local, historic neighborhoods are often impacted, losing their identity.
The new pavilion’s design works within the limitations of locally available natural resources and is based at the Al Qasimiyah School in Sharjah.

MVRDV imagines mixed-use Pixel development in Abu Dhabi as an oyster
International architectural practice MVRDV has completed Pixel, a mixed-use development project in Abu Dhabi, UAE, that is designed to cultivate community and creativity. Located on Reem Island, a natural island situated 600 meters off the coast of Abu Dhabi, Pixel is the first project to be realized in the island’s new “Makers District” neighborhood. The development is defined by seven towers that surround a communal plaza and is imagined as an oyster. Abstract patterns on the outer facades of each tower allude to oyster shells. The Mosque of the Late Mohamed Abdulkhaliq Gargash (Dubai, UAE) is a contemporary place of worship that quietly and masterfully employs form, materiality and controlled natural light to evoke a sense of calm and spiritual connection as the worshipper transitions from the outer material world to an inner sense of being. Forsan Central
Forsan Central inspiration has been taken from a bamboo forest to create a “Garden
in the City” theme. The natural reference has been adopted playfully on the building’s distinctive façade through a sequence of vertical green and brown coated aluminium pipes that recall the image of a forest. It is also present inside the building with cafés, bars and restaurants immersed in a green park under one of the region’s largest geodetic skylights, that will ultimately give the whole project an outdoor feel.
