Originally built in 1976, the Titan Student Union (TSU) is a mainstay of the Cal State Fullerton campus. Most students—commuter or residential—pass by or through the building each day. In 2012, a student governing board led the charge to improve the aging campus hub, revealing that they had saved years of student body fees and could fund and oversee an expansion. Student representatives expressed two primary objectives: To connect students to each other, while connecting the building to the campus.The new 27,000 SF addition creates a front door experience for the campus community. Replacing an aging facility, the new centrally-located Student Union, known as “The U,” is a hub for student gathering, social and study areas, offices for student organizations, general-use meeting rooms, performance venues, food service kitchens, dining areas and various retail spaces. The iconic, student-funded facility engaged university professionals, State of Wisconsin representatives and 500 student representatives from student government, programming groups, multicultural groups, and fraternities and sororities to influence the design. Concept design and medical planning for Koç University’s Medical Sciences Campus, located in Istanbul’s Topkapı district, was prepared in collaboration with Cannon Design. Sited near the campus entrance, the admissions center is one of the first buildings that visitors see when entering Brandeis. First impressions were important to our clients when we began talks about design. Several questions became the basis of our work: How might the building accommodate large numbers of people and still feel intimate? How could the architecture impress—but not overwhelm—prospective students? We knew Brandeis well when we started this project: Charles Rose Architects completed the Campus Center—directly across from the admissions center—in 2002. Our design for the business school grew out of a question: How might a single building energize and transform an entire campus? In our early visits to USD, we found that the campus lacked cohesion and easy circulation between its distinct ends that function as public portals. Our design, completed in 2009, brings a powerful organizing force to the campus. New landscapes—we created three—were as central to our design as the 75,000 SF building itself. Our first move was to relocate a parking lot; in its place we created a new quadrangle and sited the business school on it.
