Urban waterfront

In 2011, redevelopment of the Ob River embankment began in Novosibirsk, the capital of Siberia, Russia. The plan aimed to transform the industrial zone and fire station into several modern residential areas, connected by a city bike-pedestrian route forming a green corridor all the way to the river terminal. One of these areas along the embankment, the "European riverfront" residential area, is being developed by the real estate company Brusnika. Brusnika’s quarters in the River Port form a new housing estate in the centre of Tyumen, Russia. The area is located at the site of the former river port, which marked the beginning of Siberian steam navigation in the late 19th century. Barges were used to transport grain and salt, metal and peltry, fish and timber. At the time Tyumen was genuinely the door to Siberia. In the second half of the 20th century, the development of rail and automobile infrastructure led to a declining demand for river transportation. The Waterfront Project will serve a variety of mixed uses including residential and commercial components, as well as office and civic uses. These are distributed in 1,730 residential units, 660 hotel rooms, 177,800 square feet of commercial area, 428,000 square feet of office area, a Marine with 245 dock berths and 4,229 parking spaces. The proposed Master Plan for the area will incorporate commercial and office uses at the street level, while the upper levels will be occupied with residential, office and hotel uses. Extending 260 feet into Washington, D.C.'s Potomac River, the project—DC's first office building to be built on a pier—transforms an existing 1950s pier on the Washington Channel into a Class A office building and is the main cruise depot for the chartered ships of Entertainment Cruises.  Pier 4 brings new vitality to the waterfront, with a 30,000-square-foot design that sits lightly upon the existing pier and canopy and provides users with spectacular view corridors and natural light. Dror + Gensler, selected among several international shortlisted firms, have won an invited competition for the masterplan of Galataport, a vital site on the Bosphorus in the heart of Istanbul. Situated across from the Old City, the 110,000-square-meter area includes the Karaköy and Salıpazarı Quays and boasts a cluster of historic landmarks and contemporary cultural icons, including the Istanbul Modern. A significant portion of the site hosts an active cruise terminal and is closed off to the public due to security measures.
