NetZeroRowHouse began as two architects designing and building a home for their family in the Capitol Hill / H Street neighborhood of Washington DC.  A simple notion about adding solar panels started the journey to create a Net Zero Row House. AUTO-haus is a full renovation and addition of a one-story garage, constructed in the 1800’s and located in a historic Washington DC alley. While the clients, a young couple, are true urban dwellers who primarily bike and walk, they collect classic BMW’s and enjoy working on them. This project merges their favorite hobby with their new living space. This speculative new-construction duplex replaced a run-down 2-story rowhouse. The overall goal was to create modern, open living space, imbuing each unit with its own personality. The units are interlocked in both plan and section, utilizing the limited width of the site creatively to maximize interior spaces.The lower unit's entrance is from the front, and the other entrance is from a side walkway. The living/dining/kitchen spaces for each unit face the street, with large windows and high ceilings. The lower unit's master suite is located at the back, with direct connection to a leafy rear yard. KUBE's approach to the full renovation of this one-bedroom apartment in Capitol Hill was to unify the living spaces with a curvaceous form that starts in the kitchen and winds through to culminate in the living room. Stained maple cabinetry aligns with a curved ceiling soffit, providing light and creating a dramatic spatial effect throughout. The narrow outdoor deck was integrated with the indoor space through the installation of a glass wall with large sliding doors, establishing a seamless indoor/outdoor relationship. The owner of this Washington DC row house requested a totally open space for entertaining, with a modern and warm ambiance. The fireplace wall and kitchen island became the two focal points that define the formal and informal gathering spaces. Dark porcelain tile and fumed larch surround the fireplace, while contrasting glossy white cabinets and a 15’ long Equatro marble island top centers the kitchen zone.The rear wall was replaced with sliding glass doors in order to physically and visually link the new rear deck with the interior spaces. The goal for this existing suburban home was to “break open the box” to allow views of the surrounding wooded landscape. Interconnected spaces where created where previously there were walls dividing them. The kitchen and den are now opened up to the new family room, and the entry offers a view directly through the space to the trees beyond. The rear roof was raised in order to maximize views and light with large picture windows. Custom stained ash panels unify the various areas of the home. The family room’s vertical Macassar Ebony storage unit and Viroc clad chimney add warmth and texture to the double height space. The Owners are from Costa Rica. After the second meeting, their second child was born. At the third meeting, their house was filled with family and friends, a common occurrence in their home. The suburban box did not at all fit their lifestyle. It was closed, dark, and divided into very small rooms. They said that there was not one space in which they felt comfortable. They wanted a house of openness and light, where their children could be free to explore and play independently, still within view of their parents.
