House of Beginning
This is a single-family house equipped with an OM solar system. A large shelf is placed in the center of the house, where the stairs that ascend to the second floor are located. When climbing the stairs, the magnificent scenery of Mt. Asama and the sky meet the eyes; when descending the stairs, the soil and vegetable garden are all that can be discerned. In this way, the central staircase is connected directly to nature. Our aim was to create the sense of an “open” house by reversing the notions of indoors and outdoors through spatial cognition.

Starbucks Coffee at Dazaifu Tenman-gu
Location of this Starbucks is somehow characteristic, as it stands on the main approach to the Dazaifu Tenmangu, one of the most major shrines in Japan.

Established in 919 A.D., the shrine has been worshiped as “the God for Examination,” and receives about 2 million visitors a year who wish their success. Along the main path to the shrine, there are traditional Japanese buildings in one or two stories. The project aimed to make a structure that harmonizes with such townscape, using a unique system of weaving thin woods diagonally.
