In a picturesque setting in South Tyrol, an autonomous province in northern Italy, a new hotel building blends contemporary architecture with its alpine surroundings. Designed by Swiss architectural studio Modunita Architects, Auramonte is a modern addition to a traditional hotel chalet: the newly constructed Monte accompanies the established Aura, with a tunnel connecting the two buildings. Modunita Architects worked with local craftspeople to realise a holistic, low-carbon design strategy for the project, emphasising environmental responsibility and the use of local resources.

Inspired by regional barn vernacular
Spread across six floors, Auramonte’s design is inspired by regional barn vernacular. The building’s cubic form, pitched roof, dark solid wood facade, light solid wood doors and window frames, and copper elements combine to create an aesthetically pleasing profile that complements the natural surroundings. All wooden elements, including custom-built interior furnishings, were made by local carpenters, using timber from certified sustainable forestry.
To meet strict fire safety and structural requirements, the building was constructed using reinforced concrete and brickwork.

Interior design
On the interior, exposed concrete, plastered brick walls, wooden cladding, and custom-built furniture create a relaxing environment. The building’s spacious terraces and a panoramic rooftop pool, with wide mountain views, add to its charm. Holiday apartments are housed on the upper floors, with terraces facing south-west and north-east. The basement contains a parking garage, a storage place for skis and bikes, as well as technical and storage rooms.

Holistic, low-carbon design
Modunita Architects employed a holistic, low-carbon design strategy for Auramonte, emphasising environmental responsibility, regional craftsmanship, and the use of local resources. By sourcing materials locally, the project supports the district’s economy and minimises transport emissions. The building’s heating is supplied by a central district heating system. Fuelled by locally sourced and renewable wood supplies, this system provides a carbon-neutral energy model.
Auramonte has been awarded a ClimaHouse A certification: the highest energy efficiency classification in South Tyrol, this ensures minimal operational emissions.
