Alexander Mueller is an award-winning Austrian-born furniture designer and maker, based in London.
He is a hands-on designer who approaches his creation process through making and experimenting with materials. He strives to deliver exceptional pieces of furniture, defined by clean lines. He focuses on combining new technologies with traditional craftsmanship, in order to highlight the natural beauty of materials and draw attention to small details.
His design studio works through collaborations with international manufacturers to combine traditional techniques alongside the companies’ unique stories, whilst fusing new technologies and working methods, in order to create tactile products that focus on identity, function, the material used and the detail.
He completed a Foundation Degree in Furniture Making and a BA in Furniture and Product Design at the CASS School of Design. During his studies, he started developing his professional practice by doing a placement with the Scenic Carpentry Department of The Royal Opera House and interning at Philip Michael Wolfson Design Studio, Zaha Hadid’s former Head of Design, which helped to build his feeling for material, colours and structures.
Alexander was awarded the ‘Frederick Parker Award’ in 2013 for best contemporary chair design by The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers and was the winner of the ‘Heal’s Discovers Design Competition’ in 2013.
Alexander was a Designer in Residence at the CASS School of Design and set up his own studio in 2013.
He has since launched products under his own name and been involved in freelance projects.
