This is our mission
Our mission is to develop and provide innovative housing solutions for the millions of people who lose their homes during conflicts and natural disasters – at prices so low that as many people as possible will benefit from them. Better Shelter is a social enterprise. With entrepreneurial energy and market discipline we achieve social change on a large scale in a financially self sustainable way. Every dollar we generate in profit is reinvested within our company or distributed to our philanthropic owner, the Housing for All Foundation.
Better Shelter — Our Story
Better Shelter started as a small design and innovation project in the woods of Hällefors, Sweden, driven by the belief that sustainable design can make a difference to the humanitarian world. Through a groundbreaking collaboration with the UNHCR and the IKEA Foundation, Better Shelter started to develop ideas and designs for new shelter solutions. By teaming up with companies and academy, the ideas were transformed into prototypes, which were then tested and further developed together with refugees in Ethiopia and Iraq.
As a social enterprise Better Shelter strives to use design and innovation to meet the humanitarian needs with the help of modern technology. To create a better home away from home for the millions of displaced people.
Better Shelter in numbers
Better Shelter is a weatherproof and socially sustainable temporary shelter. It offers a more dignified home for displaced people and a more cost-effective solution for humanitarian organizations.
Prototypes have been tested and evaluated by UNHCR with respect to the personal, social and cultural expectations of the people that we aspire to rehabilitate, but also with acial aspects of large scale production and deployment. The result is a dignified and viable solution for the many displaced people.
