Burton Hamfelt is a Canadian born and trained architect having lived and practiced in Toronto, London, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam and is principle and owner of Burton Hamfelt Architectuur Stedebow Prototypes in Amsterdam. From 1995 until 2008 he was co-founder/director of the internationally focussed office, S333 Architecture + Urbanism in Amsterdam and London, realizing highly acclaimed high density mixed use housing and urban design projects in countries like, the Netherlands, Great Britain, New Zealand, France, Norway, Singapore and China. Merging the fields of research, urbanism and architecture Hamfelt’s work has focussed on creating unique design responses to the most demanding and exciting inner city locations into ‘new urban ecologies’ with the existing city. He has lectured internationally on his work and given design based workshops on contemporary urban challenges in countries like, Russia, China, Canada, USA, Portugal, Norway and France.
Since 2008 in response to increasingly complex questions related to buildings and the urban environment, Burton Hamfelt focuses exclusively on innovation driven design based projects. Recent works involves designing and building a number of educational buildings and new learning environments like, the Campus City Project; a dedicated research laboratory investigating the spatial capital of the knowledge economy with Amsterdam as a pilot project. Most recently Hamfelt has been awarded a grant to develop a new form of open source and collective data based 3D urban digital interface called, ModelMe. In addition, Hamfelt is partnering with Meka Inc. luxury buildings on number of modular building based projects around the world.
Parallel to working as an architect, Hamfelt was in 2012 Visiting Professor at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto and continues to teach at the Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam. He has experience as a member review panel for the Netherlands Architecture Fund for International Projects and a member of design review board for the City of Amsterdam between the years 2001 until 2006. Hamfelt has taught at a number of universities and colleges most notably, The Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam, John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto, the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam and the Architectural Association in London.
