Christ & Gantenbein

Architects from Spitalstrasse 12, Basel, Switzerland
Christ & Gantenbein is a leading architectural practice based in Basel, Switzerland. Interested in the sustainability of form, their landmark projects mix the ancient and modern in beguiling ways. The firm’s haptic approach unexpectedly challenges materials, using them in a sensitive yet versatile manner.

Founded in 1998 by Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein, the studio today staffs a team of around 70 collaborators. Their award-winning largescale renovations and expansions of the «Swiss National Museum» in Zurich as well as of the «Kunstmuseum Basel» (both 2016) cemented their position as builders of cultural space. Residential and office buildings – such as the «Opération Vaugirard» social housing project in Paris (under construction), the «Westhof» residential building in Munich (2018), the «Flexible Office Building FOB Roche» in Grenzach (under construction) and a «Mixed-use Tower» in Pratteln (2016) – along with projects such as the «Chocolate Competence Center, Lindt & Sprüngli» (under construction) and the recently won competition for the renovation and expansion of the «University Hospital Zurich» (since 2018), testimony of the flexibility of their approach and their interest in handling a variety of programs and sites.

Since graduating from ETH Zurich in 1998, Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein have taught at the ETH Studio Basel (2000–2005), the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio (2004, 2006, 2009), the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (2008), at the ETH Zurich (2010–2015) as well as at the Harvard GSD (2015–2017). In 2018 Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein were appointed Full Professors of Architecture and Design at ETH Zurich.
