Derek was educated in England and at Columbia University. He attended graduate school at the City University of Fine Art in Kyoto, Japan. He has been a consultant for the National Endowment for the Arts, a member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen since 1971 and has won numerous awards for his work in ceramics and lighting, among which was a dinner service for use in the White House.
