KLG Architects

KLG Architects was founded out of the Köper Levin George architectural practice. The firm has gone through varying iterations over the years, having originally been started by Glennie McIntosh and John Egan in Cape Town in the 1930’s, and then joined by Henk Sikkel in the 1940’s (then named Glennie, Egan and Sikkel).

The essence of the firm is an affinity for the qualities of vernacular building traditions, combined with a taste for simplicity expressed in a contemporary form. The process is explored through a series of hand-drawn sketches, drawings, and team discussions. These are driven by a diverse knowledge of construction and building techniques, explorations of the site, as well as the social impact in which the buildings are to be sited.

This design process encourages an expanding knowledge and iterative lens to the world.  The constant feedback loop from the contracting side also allows for variation of the design to accommodate the expertise on site. This results in a project and experience that excels conceptually, socially, spatially, and tectonically. Currently the firm’s involvement ranges in scale from residential, to hospitality, educational, institutional, and master planning projects.
