Founded in France in 1976 under the visionary leadership of Gilles Derain, Lumen Center quickly emerged as a distinctive presence in contemporary lighting design. A leading figure in French modernism and a scholar of the UAM (Union des Artistes Modernes), Derain infused the brand with a creative philosophy shaped by the teachings of Jacques Adnet and the spirit of international modernism.
In 1979, he unveiled the MCP lamp—a striking result of rigorous design research. The piece not only gained significant commercial acclaim but also earned a place in the permanent collection of the Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts, securing its status as a design icon.
A turning point came in 1992 when a Milanese entrepreneur acquired the company, ushering in a new era of expansion. Under Italian direction, Lumen Center solidified its presence in both domestic and international markets.
Collaborations with renowned designers such as Jean-Michel Wilmotte and Carlo Forcolini further elevated the brand, reinforcing its reputation for outstanding craftsmanship and innovative vision. In the late 1990s, Lumen Center took on one of its most ambitious endeavors: "Life River", a custom lighting and interior design project for the Royal Pines Hotel in Urawa, Japan. Developed in partnership with VillaTosca Design, the European Design Centre of Panasonic, the project showcased the company’s mastery in tailored solutions and advanced lighting technologies.
Today, innovation remains the driving force behind Lumen Center. The brand continually pushes boundaries—experimenting with synesthetic experiences that blend light, sound, and color; pioneering alternative light sources like OLEDs; and researching the effects of light on human health and metabolism.
From the food court of the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2015 to the timeless works housed in Milan’s Veneranda Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Lumen Center continues to shape spaces— and experiences—through the transformative power of light.
