Play Architecture is an all-inclusive, continually evolving architectural practice, grounded in modernist principles and enriched by the philosophies of Auroville—an international sustainable community in India. Since its inception in 2005, the practice has shown a deep interest in both architectural theory and craft, simultaneously exploring a range of architectural ideologies including Minimalism, Deconstructivism, Parametric Thinking, and Critical Regionalism.
It is a design studio where dualities are encouraged to coexist—where the scientific meets the spiritual, the obscure meets the obvious, the literal meets the abstract, and the digital engages with the analogue. This interplay fosters a seamless integration of practice, research, and academia.
As a practice, we are committed to collaboration, engaging with diverse minds and exploring a broad spectrum of building typologies rather than limiting ourselves to a single niche. We value the design process equally, whether it involves crafting a small door handle or conceptualising a large housing community.
After nearly two decades of exploration, our recent work reflects a strong inclination toward nature-centric and material-driven processes. In this evolution, form emerges from the harmonious integration of geometry, structure, forces, function, and context. Projects like the Dining Space at Devedhare and OHHO Residence illustrate this transition, showcasing an architecture that is contextually grounded, functionally efficient, materially honest, and deeply sustainable.
In recognition of our persistent inquiry and fearless design and execution approach, Play Architecture has received numerous national and international accolades, including prominent recognition at the World Architecture Festival in 2022 and 2024.
