Rafael Viñoly Architects, founded in 1983 and based in New York City, is an internationally renowned architectural firm with projects spanning six continents. Over the past quarter century, the practice’s key trademark is the ability to reinvent institutional typologies and integrate the public realm into civic buildings.
The firm has completed an unusually diverse number of projects that includes: award-winning courthouses; museums; performing arts centers; landmark convention centers; athletic facilities; banks; hotels; commercial, industrial and educational facilities; laboratories; and recreational and residential commissions. Projects range in scale from laboratory casework detailing to large-scale urban master planning. The firm has also completed several projects involving the restoration and expansion of large-scale buildings of significant historical and architectural value.
In the United Kingdom, Rafael Vinoly Architects completed firstsite Visual Arts Center in Colchester in 2011; Curve, a performing arts center in Leicester, in 2008; and the master plan for the Battersea Power Station in 2010. And in the City of London, the firm has completed design on the 20 Fenchurch tower which is under construction and will open in 2014.
In 2005, the firm instituted the Rafael Viñoly Architects Training and Research Program to give back to the architectural profession through research conducted outside of the constraints of architectural commissions. Four research teams’ studies of urbanism and housing in diverse societies in transition were published in 2012.
