SCHONBEK® Crystal Chandeliers Illuminate Film Industry
Trilliane sets the stage for Black Swan, continuing SCHONBEK's legacy of lighting the silver screen.
In any production, the set is as much a character as the actors on stage. This could be why director Darren Aronofsky cast the celebrated SCHONBEK Trilliane to light the stage in his award-winning, dark psychological-thriller, Black Swan.
While this may have been Trilliane's on-screen debut, SCHONBEK is no stranger to the world of cinema. In 2002, SCHONBEK created enormous, custom-made Jubilees for the James Bond hit Die Another Day. Since then, its chandeliers have gone on to appear in such films as Where the Truth Lies, Elizabethtown, The Pink Panther, and Disney's Enchanted, as well as the set of Donald Trump's television show, The Apprentice.
For Black Swan, Aronofsky and production designer, Therese DePrez, were looking for crystal chandeliers to create the illusion of a palatial ballroom for the film's dramatic climax. SCHONBEK's reputation for providing the highest quality crystal lighting and innovative designs made the brand a natural partner.
Aronofsky's vision for the film centers on a modern production of the Tchaikovsky classic, Swan Lake, with Trilliane making its grand entrance in the third act. Set in the ballroom of an opulent palace, this scene features the most dramatic and intricate dance sequence in the ballet, where the prince mistakenly dances with the evil black swan, Odile, and declares his love for her.
Casting a silhouette of the iconic Empire-style crystal-basket chandelier, Trilliane, an original SCHONBEK design, is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional style, making it perfect for the film. Inverted Swarovski Crystal pendeloques encircle the chandelier, giving Trilliane a more organic appearance than its classic predecessors. This distinctive crystal arrangement, patented by SCHONBEK, creates an icy illusion of mineral crystal growth, providing an incredibly beautiful graphic element that subtly mimics the Swan Queen's tiara.
As the chandeliers are the only three-dimensional elements to appear on stage with the dancers, they had to be large enough to create the image of a royal palace and emphasize the intense culmination of the film: actress Natalie Portman's symbolic transformation into the Black Swan. To create the desired effect, Aronofsky and DePrez used six massive Trillianes, each 4-feet wide and nearly 6-feet tall, to light the 60-foot wide stage.
Black Swan was just the beginning of Trilliane's career in the limelight. After the film's production, this set of six SCHONBEK Trillianes illuminated the runway for The Heart Truth® Red Dress Collection Fashion Show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City, proving, once again, that art, light and crystal dress any stage extraordinarily.
