Studioninedots is an Amsterdam-based practice for architecture and urban design. We create spaces that spark a sense of wonder. While ranging from residential developments and public buildings to urban concepts, all our projects are linked by the same touch of surprise. We see innovation and disruption as counterparts, so with a playful spirit, we challenge the existing elements and boundaries of architectural convention.
Established in 2011, Studioninedots consists of 25 architects, urban planners and other team members today. The practice is led by founders Albert Herder, Vincent van der Klei and Metin van Zijl, and associates Ike Gronheid, Jurjen van der Horst, Stijn de Jongh and Wouter Hermanns.
By centralising the desires and roles of the people who will occupy the space, we create sensible places that positively affect daily lives. We recognise the power of (re)activating and transforming complex urban sites: their dynamic contexts often demand unconventional solutions yet inspire new collective ways of living. By distilling the issue, we discover the project’s essence that drives its architecture, and its impact on the social.
Embracing the experiment helps us to make unexpected and unique designs, leading to spaces that encourage a more open interpretation of their use. We identify opportunities in circularity when facing spatial challenges and, at the same time, we embrace tactility and inspiring spaces as essential human needs. Through an awareness of context, clear interventions and a love for detail and craft, we constantly strive to form places with an intrinsic beauty.
