Part of Europe’s largest cultural development project, the Liget Budapest, intending to reimagine the cultural experience in the city, Star Japanese Design firm Sou Fujimoto Architects unveil the House of Music as an intersection of art, culture and architecture.

Being located in Budapest, Hungary, a historic centre of music in Europe, the project seeks to introduce music to life through an interplay of nature, sound, and light. The House offers a variety of live music alongside exhibitions and educational programmes to provide possibilities for any individual to perform and experience music.

Seamlessly blurring the boundaries between outside and inside, the structure features a custom-made panelled curtain wall façade, allowing users to immerse completely in the forest surroundings.

The massive undulating roof alters depth and continues to remain below the foliage of the City Park. With several crater-like cavities penetrating through the surface, the design retains existing trees while allowing natural light to reach into the deeper parts of the building. From within, the suspended ceiling supported by a steel structure displays a tessellation of tree leaves and lattice elements, further enhancing the experience of being in nature.
Therefore, the magnificent structure appears to be a continuation of the context, whether it’s music, environment or art, highlighting Sou Fujimoto’s poetic nuances through design.
