Nørreport Train Station is the busiest train station in Denmark with roughly 250,000 daily passengers. The new train station and surrounding urban space will be a new attraction and a natural gathering place at the intersection between the medieval city and the lively neighborhood of Nørrebro. Derived from the flows of passengers and passers by the project is conceived as a series of rounded, floating roofs covering transparent glass pavilions.
All station facilities will be visible and easily accessible. The station will finally become an open and welcoming public space. Celebrating Copenhagen’s status as the world’s best bicycle city, all bicycle parking will be a visible element in the urban space. In order to create a clear hierarchy between the area for bicycles and the area for flows, all bicycle parking is placed 40cm below surface. The bicycle parking will be lighted by innumerable LED lights at night. The eleven ventilation towers of the underground train station provide fresh air to the platforms. These towers will co-function as lightning on the plaza and as digital guiding systems with fully integrated LED screens for information about train departures, cultural events, advertisement etc.
