La firma Herzog & De Meuron nombró 100 arquitec- tos de 29 países diferentes, entre los cuales fuimos in- vitados, el arquitecto y artista Ai Wei Wei y su taller Fake Design realizaron el plan maestro de este desarrollo de 100 villas en Ordos, Mongolia. Respondimos con humor al encargo, en alusión a la villa tradicional como clara afirmación de la propiedad de la tierra representada por masividad y exclusividad. Al convertir el edificio en un monolito con superficie continua de tabique y vanos rectangulares cóncavos, se logró unidad en forma, materialidad y fachada, cuya línea elíptica alberga todo en su interior, a la manera de las antiguas villas italianas de Palladio o Ledoux.
The company Herzog & De Meuron called upon 100 architects from 29 countries, including us. The architect and artist Ai Wei Wei and his workshop Fake Design created the master plan of this 100 villa development plan in Ordos, Mongolia. We answered to this request fully motivated, creating a project which clearly affirms the idea of property of the land in a massive and exclusive construction style alluding to the concept of the traditional villa. Transforming the building into a monolith with a continuous surface of bricks and rectangular concave bays we created an elliptic unity of form, material and facade which houses everything in its interior, staying faithful to the style of the antique italian villas of Palladio or Ledoux.
The central idea of Ordos 100 was to develop 100 villas in Ordos, Mongolia. To make this a reality, 100 architects from 29 different countries were nominated by the architecture firm Herzog & De Meuron. The client is Jiang Yuan Cultural & Creative Industrial Development Ltd. and Jiang Yuan Water Engineering Ltd., the master plan was realized by the Chinese architect and artist Ai Wei Wei and his atelier FAKE Design.
We designed a container that holds everything with the simplicity of a single line that turns into an ellipse. The project aims at showing the entire program as a statement of ownership to the site. An uninterrupted surface created by grey brick and curved glass clearly separated the interior from the exterior, while projecting framed reflections of the surroundings. The service areas and vertical circulations are gathered in the center.
