The Butcher is a sleek Burger Bar with the appearance of a traditional, old fashioned butcher. In the crowdiest market street of Amsterdam they serve fresh food from the best imaginable quality. In the back of the shop is a secret cocktail bar where only a ‘happy few’ are allowed to have excellent cocktails.
To express this ambiguous character BK came up with two boxes. A white one in the front, for the traditional butchery, a black one behind for the ‘illegal’ cocktailbar. The boxes emphasize the contradiction between public and private, light and dark, between rough and defined…
The burger area is light, elementary and simple. The custom made white Delft tiles have drawings depicting different cutlets of meat. Customers can sit down on a rough wood bench. The counters are in simple and clean stainless steel.
If you're lucky enough to say the magic word, you can access a narrow vestibule, more like a meat locker rather that the entrance to a club. The secret cocktail bar is a black metal box with dark walls and comfortable 'poshy' velvet furniture.
