Inhabiting a former paint-making workshop inside the Bootstrap Workspace in Dalston, London, Office S&M retrofits the existing structure as their new workplace with well-being, sustainability and people-centric design at its core.
With experimentation and communal design as the central idea, the office has crafted an entire wall displaying material samples and distinct breakout areas for discussion, sketching and modelling. The office seeks to function as a laboratory experimenting with textures and materials.
Bold, colourful walls of blue, yellow, red and green wrap the workspace exercising contrast, vibrancy and energy. The electric blue tones down the warmth and reflects cool light, aiding the process of looking at the colour samples and drawings.
A separate meeting room features a wall made up of recycled plastic bottles. The wall not only provides excellent acoustic insulation but also serves as a source of light owing to the presence of bulbs inside.
In line with its focus on the mental well-being and comfort of occupants, the design includes the use of plants, air purifiers and ergonomic workstations. Exposed concrete beams overhead add a raw yet light touch to the workspace.
Therefore, the workspace design resonates with the qualities of vibrancy, materiality and sustainability.
