A new Italian trattoria in Amsterdam West, Volare & Bomboloni’s by Studio Modijefsky recalls memories of Italian summers with a mix of soft colours, rough surfaces, arches and patios. Traditional and playful graphics combine with the soft red, orange white and blue tones to bring visitors back to the golden age of the Amalfi Coast in the 1960s.

The harmonious balance between a simple backdrop and playful elements adds a fresh and unique quality to a primarily traditional context. Blue and white stripes, a range of tiles, natural stone, and graphics on stucco walls are positioned alongside Scarpa-inspired slits and neon light ceiling details. The entire space is bordered by wooden shelves backlit by Italian cocktail bottles that result in a different ambience depending on the liquor’s colour and the time of the day.

The structure of the bar follows the lines of the open kitchen with its shape being an offset of the building perimeter. Once a divided space, non-bearing elements have been demolished in order to unite interior spaces and optimize sightlines.

Offering an ideal environment for people to enjoy a drink or snack, walls and columns combine to create wall tables. High and low seating are offered throughout the bar area.

A patio area, down a single step, is reserved for special events and is lit up by long lines of warm light spheres suspended from the ceiling, which itself is covered soft textile for the entire length of the room. An irregular and illusory artwork on the left wall plays with perspective and tricks the eye.
A game of colour and light throughout the concept symbolizes Volare’s role as a place where inside and outside come together. It is a modern trattoria that embraces modernity yet the calm and beauty of of the best Italian traditions.
