Pinal County Attorney's Office

DLR Group was commissioned to design the new Pinal County Attorney’s Office as a new headquarters that would attract the best talent from neighboring counties. For its design of this five-story, 56,000-square-foot building—which sits adjacent to the Superior Courthouse—the firm drew inspiration from the saguaro cactus, whose iconic ribs shade its skin and allow it to thrive in the desert by preventing overheating. DLR Group translated this natural climate-response mechanism into a building-scale solution, leveraging principles of biomimicry. Caption Matt Winquist The building’s self-shading, heat-reducing exterior façade includes high-performance glass, steel fins, and glazing elements to maximize e... Altro

the world's temperature is a few decades away from turning our lives into misery.we are already facing the consequences of concrete jungles and deforestation in urban areas. it is not a solution to run away!do we still have the chance to save the world? or is it too late?   cities are getting warmer day by day. The effects of urban heat islands will probably be equivalent to about half the warming caused by climate change by the year 2050 which is assumed to affect about two-thirds of the world population that lives in urban areas. An easy solution like planting a tree for shade is not as simple as it seems. The Emirate’s water resources are also under 'extreme stress' which has depleted over recent decades due to economic... Structural work on Sou Fujimoto’s Hungarian House of Music is completed

In the designs for the highly anticipated House of Hungarian Music project Sou Fujimoto aims to dissolve the boundaries between the building and the Városliget park surrounding it. The key element is a large floating canopy structure punctured with holes that represents sound waves.  Liget Budapest Project The voids function as light wells to flood the interiors with natural light in the same way as the foliage of trees. The park gradually changes into a big floating roof that Sou Fujimoto describes as an “architectural forest”. Liget Budapest Project Sou Fujimoto adds lightness and transparency to the building in some places by implementing 12 metres high glass walls. The walls are made up out of 94 cust... Altro

Biomimicry informs the solar sensor-based façade of this intelligent, adaptable family home

Hive is a private residence in Gujarat, India designed by Openideas Architects as an intelligent, adaptable, and sustainable family home. Its architecture features a solar sensor-based façade inspired by hexagonal structural patterns found in nature such as honeycombs and carbon crystals.  Hexagonal solar sensor-based façade - click on image for detailed drawing This unique façade design is based on structural strength, transformability, and concepts of biomimicry. Casting patterns that change with the path of the sun, the unique opening mechanism of the façade responds to light exposure and thermal comfort levels within the house.  Yash Parekh, Fabien Charuau The building form itself was al... PANGOLIN PAVILLION

The dynamism of Contemporary Architecture and its postulates keep facing numerous amendments in terms of new techniques, materials, and ways of construction. Parametricism or Parametric Architecture is one such style that emerged out of advanced ideas of computation and digital animation techniques, moulded into the built world.   With the help of this mechanism, today designers can choose to recreate any form that seems relevant. However, the primary concern at hand, is whether these can be manifested to address pertinent global issues related to the environment, climatic changes and animal abuse.   We at Ant Studio, have always endeavoured to create designs that generate a conversation by blending such avant-garde processes... Rhizome House

As the only selected Asian and Singaporean finalist entry, DP Architects’ “Rhizome House” design was handpicked to be one of 14 lighting installations built for the Illuminade route of the prestigious Amsterdam Light Festival. The light structure was on display to an estimated 1 million visitors from December 15 2016 – 8 January 2017 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.“Rhizome House” was chosen from 500 submissions worldwide in two categories impacting the water-based Water Colors route and land-based Illuminade route of the festival. Sited at the Hermitage Dock, one of the premier locations along the walkable Illuminade route, the “Rhizome House” light installation was highly visible due to its proximity to the canal, making it observable from t... Triodos Bank

Notre-Dame Cathedral

A Gothic & Biomimetic Forest For The CathedralNotre-Dame cathedral, which has been keeping watch on Christian and Western culture since the beginning of its construction eight centuries ago, nearly saw its end in the historic fire that devoured its roofs as we watched on in disbelief. Reflecting the all-spiritual splendor of our material and sacred heritage, this sublime lady has undoubtedly reminded us of the frailty of our life and our civilization. What is more, this powerful fire has awakened our dystopian imagination and somewhat echoed the Church's current identify crisis, as well as the environmental challenges we are facing through climate change. Now, as we start thinking about Notre-Dame's reconstruction, questions arise as to... Shell Lace Stent prototype

Tonkin Liu Architects design ground-breaking medical deviceLondon-based architects Tonkin Liu are taking their expertise beyond architecture with the invention of an innovative new medical device. The practice, founded by partners Anna Liu and Mike Tonkin, have created a prototype stent for use in the trachea (windpipe). The stent is a new type of Shell Lace Structure – the practice’s signature single-surface structural technology designed and developed through a decade of research for architectural and engineering applications.Tonkin Liu’s novel Shell Lace Structure uses biomimicry to abstract principles from natural structures such as molluscs and plants. Blackburn House

This family home is nestled amongst the gums, cantilevering dramatically over the sloped site so it feels more like a treehouse than a regular home. With views from the site cascading down the hill towards Gardiners Creek Reserve in Melbourne’s Blackburn, this modular home crafted by ArchiBlox harmoniously embraces the natural context of the surrounds whilst maximising the sustainable orientation of the site. Separated into two wings to maximise the views, both forms cantilever dramatically over their lower edges sitting above the natural ground level. The living area wing is elevated and sits proudly over a rocky native garden giving privacy to the living spaces within. Jutting past the adjoining bedroom wing with massive windows wr... Altro

Elytra Filament Pavilion

V&A reveals new installation fabricated by a robot for first ever Engineering Season Today, the V&A marks the start of its Engineering Season with the unveiling of the new installation, Elytra Filament Pavilion. The pavilion is the outcome of four years of ground-breaking research on the integration of architecture, engineering and biomimicry principles. The project explores how biological fibre systems can be transferred to architecture. The 200m² pavilion structure is inspired by lightweight construction principles found in nature – the fibrous structures of the forewing shells of flying beetles known as elytra. Elytra’s components have been fabricated by a robot at the University of Stuttgart and assembled on site in the V&A’s John M... Altro
