New Biochemistry University of Oxford

The Biochemistry Department at Oxford University is the largest in the UK and internationally renowned for research work in DNA, cell growth and immunity. The building achieves a new ethos of “interdisciplinary working” where the exchange of ideas is promoted in a large collective and connective environment. At the same time researchers have the space to concentrate on intense work in highly serviced laboratories. The building deliberately challenges the public perceptions of the secretive nature of research. Elevations are transparent with research spaces brought to the external face, making a political point about the value and integrity of biomedical research. The facades are enriched by a series of laminated glass fins which fra... Altro

Gerardo Molina School

The relationship with the city and its immediate borders More than an isolated school, the aim is to develop an urban project that encourages new sectorial centralities with the equipments that are already being used by the school such as the library, the auditorium, the cafeteria, the support rooms for neighborhood activities. As the Project will be winding and turning it will be opening to the city, leaving space for small squares and exterior parks for public usage, leaving behind the bars and walls that stereotyped education institutions as closed spaces. The conformation of small squares and green spaces with tress direct on the surrounding streets, accompanied by the auction modules, will redefine direct accesses. The borders... Altro

Rather than an architectural object, we pretend to develop a landscape related to geography and urban topography inserted there in; we search for organizational rules to develop projects that favor a ´´new natural contract´´. We fold, map, and tear; operations that build architecture-landscape at the same time, reformulating relations between depth and figure, an approximation in the search of alternative ideas capable of favoring that ´´new natural contract´´ tuned with a landscape and a natural order. The project is located in one of the hillsides most affected by the violence in the eighties because of drug trafficking in the city of Medellin and is part of the social inclusion agenda of the Mayor to provide equal opportunities in social... House in Highgate Cemetary

Inspired by seeing Eldridge Smerin’s Stirling Prize shortlisted house The Lawns, on Highgate Hill in north London, the owner of a nearby house approached the practice about designing a new house on the same site. The existing house dating from the 1970’s was designed by noted Architect John Winter and sat next to Highgate Cemetery, London's greatest Victorian cemetery. Although the site offered spectacular views over the cemetery, Waterlow Park opposite and the city skyline beyond, replacing a John Winter house is a decision not taken lightly. When Eldridge Smerin had investigated options for either retaining the corroding steel structure or for replacement, it was clear that to restore the Winter house would have required complete reconstr... Star Place

A vibrant new landmark has appeared in the fast and modern city of Kaohsiung: the luxury shopping center Star Place. Both outside and inside, the building radiates dynamism and the kind of bright perfection that the architect refers to as the ‘Made in Heaven Effect’. Everything about the building moves the eye. Kaohsiung The city of Kaohsiung is the second largest city on the island of Taiwan and has a population of some 1, 5 million. Its geographical position along the Taiwan Strait has allowed it, over time, to become a maritime hub. After the Second World War, the city grew rapidly, transforming from an undeveloped fishing village into a booming, heavily industrialized port city. Besides its large international container port, the ci... Altro

PEDREGAL SHOPPING CENTER

This project comes to set a new architectural statement in the Pedregal area of Mexico City which has been neglected, because nothing new and important had happened since its beginings when “Cuidad Universitaria” was built. Nowadays the real-estate pressure and the need of services are beginning to promote significant changes. The way that this building relates with its context, is by breaking up with what is common to the zone, which are big houses in big areas surrounded by very high stone walls which do not let anybody know what is happening outside and vice versa. This goal is achieved with the main facade that consists of two elements: one of them linen with a zinc plate with large irregular perforations to which a different sh... Altro

Temple de l’Amour II

1-Dec-2017 The project was conceived after the accidental discovery of a vault in the abutment of a former railway bridge. 2.5 m. of limestone were crushed to reveal this beautiful space, formerly concealed. On the bridge a pavilion was made for contemplation, as a counterpoint to the existing, 18th century folly called the Temple de l’Amour. Any interference of construction has been avoided: glass itself carries the roof, creating a full panorama, while enhancing the beauty of the existing stonework. The visual mass of the roof gives a sense of continuous, extended space. The aim of the design is to express the magic of the roof floating on nothing. The detailing is coherent, non-conspicuous, minimal. As if the glass is cut through th... Altro
