light sheds

Pragmatism + Symbolism The light sheds is a photographer’s studio that stands in the garden of his existing house, located in the hilly region of southern Kanto. The space is solely composed of essential functions required for a photographic studio and the result is one single room of 4.5m by 7.2m. From the start, we had a simple concept of creating a simple, pragmatic sheds. In order to form a large volume out of the limited budget available, a timber frame, gable roof structure was selected. However, a gable roof would typically entail horizontal joists, which would reduce the clear height required for photo shoots. Following simple geometric rules, the roof was distorted into a multi-facetted, asymmetric form. Three ridge beams at... Altro

Dalseong-gun Citizen’s Gymnasium - Encircling Nature and People

Background and vision Nature felt more connected to us when we were small. For children, nature is a treasure room of joys of sensorial and physical exploration. It is a place for one to run on a field, climb up a tree and sketch in sand. We accumulate fond memories of simple happiness during the play in Nature and with fellows. However, modern conveniences and hepatic urban lifestyles have deprived us of time and space to engage in physical activities, open our hearts, relax our minds in Nature. We, therefore, yearn for a release outlet to regain a sense of balance and wellness. Korean nation-wide sports promotion programs not only aimed to promote public wellness and healthy lifestyles, but envision to bring forth peace and harmony... Altro

Kindergarten of grenade sur l’adour

The location of the project is within a suburban residential area. This project has taken the opportunity to reinterpret the housing landscape with an environmentally conscious design and responsive approach to durability. From the facade to the interiors and even the furniture, the association of design and durability is prevalent and forms the basic canvas around which we have developed our cutting edge design. The association of biometric and climatic efficiencies blend to provide a state of the art solution using the building aspects to drive the internal comfort regulation. This is highlighted by the exposition of the reception and offices to the North, to encourage development of the main activity zones to the the South. Comfor... Altro

Te Kaitaka – 'The Cloak'

Auckland Airport is undergoing a major transformation. While this involves new consideration of terminals & infrastructure, it also considers the creation of an urban environment in the surrounding landholding – a move away from large warehouse based logistics companies to commercial & retail opportunities & the streetscapes and open spaces for the people working here. Te Kaitaika ‘The Cloak’ has been established in the heart of this growing district. Auckland International Airport sought to create a sculptural built form sited on the corner of two of these recently upgraded streets, one heavily traffic based & one focussed on the pedestrian. The functional brief was simple - a flexible space for hosting events, meetings & introducing th... Altro

Dorset Road

24aDorset Road isasmall two bedroomedhousein Alexandra Palace, north London, addedonto aterrace of picturesque Victorian cottagesoriginally built for railway workers. The clients had lived there for twenty years, loved the road and took the opportunity to sell their old house, but keep an attached garage, which became the site for theirnew house. Our brief was to make a simple, contemporary home, filled with light. The terrace was locally listed so we knew that we would be up against reasonably strict planning restrictions, but it soon became apparent that the conservation officer would not accept anything other than an exact replica cottage. The addition of a small rear extension was refused permission but subsequently won on appeal and... Altro

Single-family house in Curile

Bela Krajina or White Carniola is a small traditional region in southeastern part of Slovenija. It is characterised by low carst hills, beautiful birch forests, vast wineyards and beautiful contryside. There are 4 dominant architectural typologies. So called Uskoški dvor is an arrangement of single storey building sets organised arround the common court. Since the client had a relatively large plot and his wish was that the whole building develops in the groundfloor, this typology seemed as a perfect starting point. The idea to combine traditional with contemporary was also present when searching solutions for overcoming larger spans. The largest span is bridged with a beautiful timber construction, echoing the surounding traditonal cons... Altro

The Sett

The house is located on Uplands Road, on the eastern edge of the village of Totland. Totland was developed during the nineteenth century as a residential and seaside resort following the formation of the Totland Bay Estate Company in the 1870s. Until then, the area had been predominantly rural and remote, and this pattern of development is characteristic of much of the island. Uplands Road is a small lane on a hill above the village, and the site itself originally formed part of the grounds of a large house built in 1924, with extensive gardens overlooking the sea. The site for the Sett was the orchard and is enclosed by mature trees, with apple, pear, plum, greengage and medlar trees growing across it. Retaining the sense of enclo... Altro

OFFICE OFF

The architect’s office heri&salli from Vienna designed in Burgenland/Austria on behalf of the façade design company “FOB-face of buildings” a new office building made of wood. Though normally a place dedicated to “work”, from the beginning the concept of quality of life and leisure culture took a mayor part in the planning. The traditional aspect of “going to work” therefore has received minor consideration. Integrated meeting points, attached living and relax areas, as well as a gym, a fire pond converted into a swimming pool, common areas outside and a climbing wall in the 3 floor high entrance hall try to embed the task “work” in a living environment .-OFFICE OFF By considerating modern energetic and technical solutions which aim to r... Longstanton Park and Ride

Background Set in the countryside on the northern edge of Cambridge, the village of Longstanton boasts a rich and long heritage stretching back to Roman times and has been expanding rapidly over the past 10 years to become a vibrant and younger community. Alongside the traditional village, new residents have been progressively settling in at the Home Farm housing development site to the north-west of the village, a development which has seen a necessary infrastructure investment across the region by Cambridgeshire County Council, investment that included a guided bus way and related park & ride stations along it. Jackson Civil Engineering, the largest company within the SEH Group – one of the largest privately owned construction comp... Altro

Single-family house in GROHARJEVO

The clients were a usual young family, a couple with small children. They bought the plot in package with standard house plans with a building permit. They came to our office if we could move some windows for them...however we introduced them our vision of their house and of course they were fascinated since it was tailored to them. The 3 floors are layers of different use: the top floor is most private with sleeping units, in the middle on the groundfloor is a big open living area and kitchen, and below is the lowest floor where working and living is combined - the client is a engineer and has his office and showroom here. When the kids come from school they occupy this area, over the large overhang they can play outside no matter the w... Altro

Low energy timber house Tielt-Winge

Concept and Vision Peter Van Impe, the architect of this modern/contemporary private residence was faced with a challenge. The daughter of a besides lying ancestral home dating from the 60’s, wanted to built a residence for herself and her three sons. Building regulations dictated a minimum of 3 meters distance from the property boundary on the west side, while on the east side the house would have to be linked to the adjacent parental home in the future. The (basic) concept consists of an elongated rectangular volume that is enveloped by an L-shaped volume. The rectangular volume encloses all communal spaces of the house, such as the living room, kitchen and lounge area, where large windows provide the room with plenty of natural light. T... Altro

Treehouse

Kinlochlaich House is a listed building with its own beautiful gardens and a specialist garden plant centre set in a 18th century octagonal walled garden. Our brief was to design an eco treehouse to provide an extra special self-catering holiday experience. The treehouse sits amongst the trees in an old orchard and is perched on the edge of a ravine above a woodland burn. Designed to be contemporary and green the treehouse has a lime render finish on 'breathing' timber frame walls with arched windows and a Ballachulish slate roof complementing the historic house. Internally a whole oak tree supports the roof with circular stairs winding up to a gallery. Scottish oak was used extensively for the specialist joinery which was skillfu... Altro
