Public selects SunStyle Solar Roof as 'For the Planet Award 2023' winner

Archello Awards 2023 has revealed its winning products. For each of the 17 categories, one product was awarded by jury vote, and one product was awarded by public vote. The public has selected the SunStyle Solar Roof by the Swiss company SunStyle to receive the overall For the Planet Award, which honors a recently-launched product supporting sustainable design and building.

The SunStyle Solar Roof is a system of photovoltaic roof panels with a refined and unique form and texture. The tile was developed as an energy-efficient, long-lasting construction element. The design of its triangulated form was inspired by the slate roofs of the Swiss Alpine region. As a roofing system it offers sustainable weather protection, as well as enables efficient electricity production over roof surfaces.

The shingles are composite panels consisting of laminated photovoltaic cells topped with a layer of prismatic tempered and textured glass. The panel is a monocrystalline solar cell type, which makes use of single pieces of silicone as a semiconductor, as opposed to less-efficient polycrystalline cells. The SunStyle panels include an extra silicon layer to reflect some of the sun’s rays back into the cell, allowing them to produce more energy than conventional solar panels.

Each SunStyle shingle has a nominal output of 110 wp (watt peak) and an efficiency of 17 percent. The system is a patented roofing solution that is watertight through its overlapping application, durable and warrantied for 25 years. The product is manufactured with smooth or textured glass and optional color-coating. Colored tiles are pigmented on the inside of the front glass using a custom-developed technology with UV-stable pigments to enable long-lasting color as well as to maintain a self-cleaning function of the outer glass surface.

The product has been specified for projects such as the Google Bay View campus designed by Bjarke Ingels Group in collaboration with Heatherwick Studio. For this project, SunStyle produced 50,000 photovoltaic roof panels each measuring 1 x 1 meter.
