Trends: The hammock floor

Hammock floors, also sometimes called loft hammocks or loft nets, are typically made of durable polypropylene rope materials. Spread out flat and taught, they act as a playful extension of a floor. Luxurious and comfortable, they provide relaxing places to hang out or for kids to play. Some people even use hammock floors as bed given they provide a comfortable, weight-free sleep that doesn’t put pressure on sore backs.

Here, we take a look at several house projects that have employed hammock floors in creative, fun and architecturally interesting ways.

Saigon House by a21 Studio

Named ‘Best House’ at the World Architecture Festival, the dining room is covered with a mesh to create a children’s play space that can be viewed from everywhere else in the home. The Vietnamese office explains that children were the ‘main factors’ of consideration in the design. More here

Designed by Russian studio Ruetemple, a large hammock made with construction netting is used to form the mezzanine level in one room of this family home. The designers explain the area where the netting is employed was too low to stand in, yet there was a desire to not see space go to waste. Thus, the idea of a hammock took form…..More here

Russian Summer Home by Ruetemple

Also from the Russian design office, here the hammock floor was used to keep children occupied by parents sleep in this Russian summer home. The children are early beds, so in order not to wake up their parents, they decided upon the design feature. More here

In the middle of this beach house in Thailand, layers of nets are stretched across an open atrium creating a vertical playground with opportunities for running, climbing, hiding and hanging. More here
