Brooklyn Townhouse

The brief was to do the interior design for four floors of this new construction townhouse. The lower and ground level floors have an open floor plan with the public areas and the upper two levels house the bedrooms and offices. A rooftop deck has not yet been finished.

The goal for the atmosphere was to create a space that felt casual and peaceful, while still creating a sense of interest and youthfulness. This was achieved by using a mostly serene pallet with touches of vibrancy. The project also used pieces from small scale makers and fabricators, as well as vintage and vintage inspired items to create a unique blend. Playful and geometric patterns were mixed to create space that felt vibrant and fun, while natural materials helped maintain an overall sophisticated feel.

The client wanted a beautiful and practical space that the family could grow into. Their first child was born over the course of the project, so the client needed the home to be both beautiful and baby ready.

The design focused on using natural materials like leather, wool, cork, rattan and ceramics as well as a wide range of wood tones. Natural materials were used to tie the home to the outdoors, and to make the home feel like an oasis in the city. The use of natural materials also helped tie the home to the clients love of nature and travel.

In a row of new townhomes, this one stands out. From the bespoke landscaping in the front and back gardens, to the organic shapes and autumnal colors selected for the interiors, each space evokes style and personality. Walking distance from coffee shops and bodegas, this place is cool.

Designing a home for a young couple, with a new baby, who love to cook and entertain means creating open environments with soft edges to gather. This “impossible bouquet”— what Lucy Harris is known for designing—comes to life in this residence. The custom, built-in dining banquette is covered in fabric by Tibor in a lush moss color. Rugs were chosen as much for color and pattern as texture. Sofas and chairs are comfy and inviting. Sculptural objects and art with unique meanings dot shelves and walls. A rooftop skylight over the upper-level stairwell, and an expanse of sliding glass doors on the lower ones, make it feel light and airy. It all comes together in a flawless combination of modern eclecticism.
