the new Juliana Bridge

The new Juliana Bridge lays on a unique location, in a wide bend of the river Zaan at the foot of the historical Zaanse Schans; a Unesco world heritage site. The bridge design is kept purposely modest in order not to compete with the skyline of windmills, small wooden houses and typically Dutch polder land. The bridge is carefully integrated in the surroundings and although the design is contemporary, it is subtle and never overshadows the historical buildings.

With an elegant swing it skims low and comfortably over the water, offering the users an unobstructed view of the surroundings. The bridge is supported by a series of elegant piers that are set back from the deck edge, thus allowing a continuous horizontal line for the deck. The deck is split up in a car section and a section for slow traffic thus creating a safe and comfortable viewing place for tourists and passers-by.

The moving part of the Juliana Bridge does not have an enclosed counterweight room under the bridge. This way the view under the bridge remains unobstructed and the continuous line of the deck is not interrupted. Each deck has its own counterweight in the open, when the bridge is closed the counterweight is invisible under the deck. No set of piers is equal, the width of the piers increases gradually towards the opening. The pier underneath the deck pivot is the highest deepest and widest of them all. The entire moving mechanism of the deck is hidden inside this pier.

In 2009 the Juliana Bridge won the Dutch Concrete Award
