Traditional components of Chinese design sparked the inspiration for the design of the fine-dining restaurant Subu. Fused together with the Scandinavian design style we created a universal aesthetic with strong references to Chinese culture and traditions like the concept of ‘private dining rooms’.
DESIGN CONCEPT
South Beauty Group asked Johannes Torpe Studios to re-brand, re-define and re-design the “classic” Chinese restaurant. We fused traditional components of Chinese design together with a Scandinavian design style to create a universal aesthetic with a Chinese touch.
The restaurant is located in a high-end mall in the new financial district of Beijing. We designed a restaurant that not only stands out visually but also leaves a lasting impression from the seating comfort, to the food on the plate and the staffs work satisfaction - we wanted it to be a nice place to work.
The grandeur of the space inspired us to install five custom-designed arcs to stand prominently above the main dining area. The arcs function as a significant visual statement while at the same time enclosing and defining the restaurant area.
PRIVATE DINING
Inspired by the traditional Chinese private rooms we installed 14 "cocoons", designed to deliver an exclusive and intimate dining experience. From the outside the organically shaped cocoons are shiny and almost glowing. Once inside they transform into elegantly alluring, intimate pods with an atmosphere of utter extravagance each of them equipped with their own unique interior, creating a truly memorable experience for the guests.
