Established in 2015 by Parks Canada Agency (PCA), the Rouge National Urban Park (RNUP) is an ecologically protected zone that encompasses much of the Rouge River and Little Rouge Creek valleys. At 7,910 hectares, RNUP is the largest urban park in North America and Canada’s first “National Urban Park”. Straddling parts of Toronto, Markham, Durham, and Uxbridge, the RNUP forms a green corridor of forests, farmland, wetlands, ravines, and meadows that connect the Greenbelt to Lake Ontario. The architectural design plans for the mass timber basketball arena with a composite timber load bearing system were developed after being directly commissioned by the Cultural and Athletic Organisation of Galatsi Municipality as a special building requiring specialised technical know-how and related research in timber construction. The Fiches district in Lausanne is structured by a morphology of plots deployed like a roll of the dice on the territory and made up of sectors. FEDERAL Studio The school site occupied one of these sectors, according to the competition program. The architects decided to take the school out of the established morphology, specific to housing, to affirm its status as a public building. They proposed to split the program and take the opposite of the established implementation. FEDERAL Studio Thus, the school asserts itself as a "pivotal building" at the center of the site.
