Lehmbauplatten (clay panels) are prefabricated boards made from clay mixed with natural fibres, designed for use in dry construction as an alternative to gypsum plasterboard. They are screwed onto timber or metal stud frames and finished with a thin layer of clay plaster, providing a fast and clean way to create interior walls and ceilings. Beyond their practical benefits, clay panels offer significant sustainability advantages: their production is unfired, requiring very little energy and resulting in low embodied carbon; they are vapour-permeable and hygroscopic, naturally regulating indoor humidity; and they provide thermal mass, storing and releasing heat to stabilise room temperatures. At the end of their life, they can be dismantled and fully recycled into new clay products or returned to the earth, supporting a circular building economy.
