Soft Props by Konstantin Grcic - Cassina I Contemporanei Collection
Konstantin Grcic’s Soft Props modular system brings together simplicity, flexibility and interaction to create a contemporary scenario.
Design that defines architectural space. Following the presentation of the architectural elements Props in 2016, Konstantin Grcic develops the concept of defining space based on the needs of the user. Freestanding and versatile, Soft Props is made up of modular seating elements in two sizes that can be combined in various arrangements with accompanying side or freestanding tables. Starting from its most abstract element, the ottoman, the piece can be constructed to best relate with its surrounding space. The user can continuously interact with the sofa by arranging the loose cushions as desired for comfort.
Heritage for innovation. Cassina’s heritage is evident in the development of this design. The exposed tubular rail that runs around Soft Props recalls the Milanese subway handrails part of a project by Franco Albini and Bob Noorda, or the railings on the large transatlantic ships that Cassina furnished in the 50’s. Grcic develops this strong architectural element by using the rail to outline the sofa’s territory, creating a protective boundary that defines space within space. The rail is made up of 4 different interchangeable parts that are linked together thanks to an invisible system of joints inside the tube, thus allowing numerous compositions to be created. A rubber polyurethane grip covers parts of the rail for both aesthetics and function.
Free flow, the continuous transformation between public and private. Soft Props mutates depending on the user’s requirements. While the sofa continues to have an important function and central role in the home, it is also an element that can be used in public areas, creating situations where people can come together and communicate in a shared space. The blurred line between public and private therefore dissolves, there is no longer a clear separation. “I wanted to make a piece of furniture that is spatial, something more abstract, without compromising comfort”.
