All About Steel Lattice Structures


In the industry, steel lattice towers are commonly used for transmission of power, generation of wind energy, for mobile signal transmission and so on. Lattice towers are used in many civil engineering applications, typically including roofing structures and telecommunications and electrical power transmission towers. These structures are suited for weight minimization and for reducing wind resistance. For structural design and analysis of lattice towers, the current industrial tools are finite element (FE) software packages combined with established design codes.


The general procedure for FE modelling of lattice towers is to use linear elastic uniaxial truss finite elements. These elements are used since the tower members are mainly loaded axially along their length and at the structural connections bending moments are low. The structural connections are assumed to be frictionless pin connections and the truss elements free to rotate relative to the other members, the perfect pin connection seldom occurs since the structural connection behavior always has a degree of rigidity. This is dependent on the type of the actual connection. This can be a single bolted or multiple bolted angle, or a welded connection using a gusset plate.


There are four different types of communication towers that can be used to transmit cellular signals. There are many different types of cell towers that can be installed depending on specific purpose — the most common of which is referred to as a guyed tower. Guyed-tower-construction is a light- to heavy-weight communication tower constructed with straight rods aligned in a triangular form, but supported with wires at all angles. Guyed towers are especially tall, reaching heights as high as 2,000 feet, and are typically used to hold antennas high off the ground allowing for greater signal strength and increased cell reception.


In addition to cellular use, these also serve for radio and television signal transmissions. These are ideal for rural customers who require maximum height at an economical cost. The majority of the work in published literature with regard to lattice towers concerns the analysis of electricity transmission towers for the purpose of the work presented, electricity transmission towers are particularly interesting because these have a mode of loading similar to that of wind turbines.
