The Adelaide Oval Redevelopment is a landmark public design project for Adelaide and South Australia. It has been recognised nationally as a leading example of public sports architecture that positively contributes to the liveliness and vibrancy of the City of Adelaide. The underlying philosophy of this project was to create an activated and flexible public events platform that embraces the historic social and cultural context of the Adelaide Oval.
The design approach blends the Adelaide Oval’s proud and significant history by implementing a contemporary expression of space and structure that is distinctly South Australian. The Stadium is a key component in the activation of the City of Adelaide River Torrens riverbank precinct. The public and cultural benefits are diverse and extensive. The Adelaide Park Lands are enhanced through contemporary architecture, respect for heritage and site infrastructure improvements. A new and diverse range of events in the Adelaide Oval precinct are now a reality for City of Adelaide and The Festival State.
Hames Sharley were appointed as part of the architectural services team for the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval, in conjunction with Cox Architecture and Walter Brooke Architects. Hames Sharley was responsible for the Western Grandstand, Interior Architecture, Indoor Training Centre and the Stadium bowl. Any surplus Hames Sharley staff joined project teams working on other sections of the project.
Another significant portion of works undertaken by Hames Sharley was the responsibility for design and documentation for the basement areas. These areas included functional areas such as kitchens, maintenance, operations, staff amenities and car parking, together with critical functional areas such as AFL change rooms, media facilities, and player family facilities.
