The Province of Fryslân aims to transform Kornwerderzand into a multifaceted meeting place where past, present and future come together. A series of projects on and around the Afsluitdijk has created momentum to connect these developments. Studio D was asked to explore, through design research, how Kornwerderzand can become a destination.

The Afsluitdijk Wadden Center forms the new beating heart of the area, a central point from which everything can be discovered.
The solution lies in creating an integrated and flexible area concept that positions Kornwerderzand as a vibrant hub. By strengthening the Afsluitdijk Wadden Center as the central starting point, visitors are encouraged to explore the area.

In the future, the Kornwerderzand plan will give the area a unique identity and character, as an indispensable part of the Afsluitdijk. The spatial design, with a strong focus on green and water, connects impressive infrastructure with the distinctive natural landscapes of the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. A thoughtful and flexible programme ensures ongoing surprise, while a strong underlying organisation guarantees continuity and a compelling range of activities.
