After the City of New York took over control of the Bedford-Union Armory in 2013, it directed the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to issue a request for proposals for a redevelopment plan that would serve longstanding community needs, preserve historical character, incorporate sustainability and provide employment opportunities for local residents.
In December 2015, NYCEDC designated Bedford Courts LLC, an affiliate of BFC Partners, to redevelop the Bedford-Union Armory as part of a mixed-use project including recreational and community space and new mixed-income housing and office space. That development proposal was approved in November 2017 by the New York City Council as part of the city’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP).
