BGH House

Upon receiving the brief from the Client, we were intrigued by the shape of the site. 2 different levels and located on a long stretch of corner road intersection, surrounded by several large Trembesi trees. This was an opportunity to showcase a good massing concept that reflects the space sub division on the inside of the building.

The front massing was designed to be 2 storey part of the building emphasizing its simple and boxy look. Wood battens secondary screen were added to provide extra privacy considering the corner land plot context. The secondary screen also designed to be an effective screen from eastern sunlight.

The rear massing were designed to be a long stretch of rectangular shape with the bitumen sheet roof that comes down as a wall façade as the dominant visual element. The translucent living - dining area at the 1st floor were actually part of the effort to balance the top black (dark tone) façade so that the overall rear massing can be seen as one lightweight element. Still proportionately friendly despite the floating & dark tone façade.

Both front and read massing were connected with the presence of a staircase block. This vertical looking segment were meant to balance out the horizontal length of the whole massing. So this staircase block was indeed a visual element as well as the main internal circulation function to connect all three floors.

The building program itself was quite straight forward. Main Entrance located at 1st storey together with most of living and service areas. From 1st storey going up to 2nd storey to reach bedroom sections. 2 Kids bedroom with shared bathroom & a proper size of ensuite master bathroom. There is proper size mezanine void to maintain visual space connection between 2nd and 1st storey. Ground floor located at lower section of the site to be used mainly for family and kid activities. Free arrangement space and wooden patio as well as a 5.5 x 5 meter basketball court surrounded with greens. Sheltered by a large trembesi tree, this ground floor was really a proper and private space for families and friends.

The whole house was visually distinct but humbled by its surrounding. Functional and comfortable without being overwhelming.
